Edward Jenner administering the first smallpox vaccination in 1796. Painting by Ernst Board.
Your newborn will need many vaccines in the first year of life (see below for schedule.)  This painting portrays Edward Jenner administering the first smallpox vaccination in 1796!

Before your child receives any immunizations, you will have received a vaccine information statement (VIS) describing the vaccine, both the benefits and risks, including possible side effects and reactions to watch for.  Our practice strongly encourages the use of these vaccines--but of course when there are contradindications, we will inform you.

All hospitals in New York administer the first dose of hepatitis B vaccine to newborns in the nursery shortly after birth. We strongly recommend that all babies receive this vaccine in the nursery.

Many parents are asking us to follow different vaccine schedules, particularly "Dr. Bob's." There are many problems with this schedule--please review this article before discussing Dr. Bob with us. Also for a clear, concise overview that addresses most parents' concerns about vaccines, please review "Clear Answers & Smart Advice About Your Baby's Shots" by Dr. Ari Brown.

Many parents are concerned about vaccines, the MMR in particular, and autism. These concerns are COMPLETELY UNFOUNDED. If you would like to see our complete collection of authoritative articles on this subject, please see our  online library.  Unfortunately, due to the misinformation that has been circulated regarding vaccines and autism, many children are not vaccinated on schedule and there has been a resurgence of many vaccine preventable diseases, including measles and mumps (now 1500+ cases since this past summer) in the New York area.

Regardless of religious affiliation, this paper entitled Compulsory Immunization in Jewish Day Schools (.pdf version click here) puts the risks vs. benefits of immunization into a crystal clear perspective--historically, scientificly, (and religiously if you are Jewish.)

    Immunizing your child is IMPORTANT
. The efficacy of vaccines is dependent on the widespread use of these vaccines as none of these are 100% effective. If more and more people go without vaccination, the incidence of these preventable diseases will increase. Please take a look at the CBS News 60 Minutes story,
    Saying 'No' To Immunization.

While everything in life is fraught with risk and nothing we do is exclusively beneficial, the incredible improvements in child health and life expectancy are due in large part to vaccines. To help put "risk" into some perspective, take a look at this website from Harvard University.
